There are many aspects to Australia. It offers something to suit all tastes; whether you want to laze by the beach in the sun, ski down snowy mountain slopes, go deep sea diving, shop in cosmopolitan cities or explore the wilderness and get lost in a rain forest – Australia has it all.
As a travel professional you will need to have an all round knowledge of our country so that you can offer the best possible advice and options to your customers. You will need to know what each area offers; the best time to travel to each state; how to get there; what to do and see there …. and much more.

Identify and access information sources
With this in mind, where do you begin to gather the information you need to properly advise your customers?
Information about products, packages, attractions and items of a general geographic nature can, in fact, be obtained from a wide variety of sources.
Some sources are:
- Brochures on specific areas, regions or attractions are freely available and can be used to gather information.
- Tourist bureaus (regional, state and national) are one of the best sources of information as they specialize in their specific area and can provide you with material and knowledge that covers transport and accommodation options as well as tours, sightseeing attractions and activities. …. list continued in learner guide…
Obtain information on functional or operational features
Working in tourism sounds like a fun and easy job. It takes a great deal of specialized knowledge, however, to be able to make appropriate recommendations. You must, certainly, have a sound understanding of the various destinations you serve – but you must also have an understanding of functional and operational features that will make all the difference to a customer’s tourism arrangements. These might include knowing about;
- Climate conditions – when is the best time to travel to specific places
- Transport options – the best methods of getting to and around given destinations
- Types of holidays available; what will appeal to specific tastes and requirements
